The KF-21 Boramae South Korea’s 4.5-Generation Fighter Jet

russia military

The KF-21 Boramae is a South Korean fighter jet that could soon become a key part of the nation's defense strategy. The joint venture was formed with Indonesia and GE Aviation. GE Aviation supplies F414 engine for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet as well as Saab JAS 39E/F Gripens. The KF-21 Boramae is scheduled to start flying in 2026. This will eventually replace 60 multirole F-15K Slam Eagles.

The prototype 4.5-generation fighter plane of the Korean military is currently being tested in flight. ROKAF calls it a "supersonic, twin engine aircraft."

It has a top speed at 2,200 km/h and an expected range of 2,900km, making it capable of attacking targets far away. It can carry air-to–air missiles including Meteor beyond–visual-range air–to-air missiles as well as precision-guided bombs.

Seoul is developing a standoff missile cruise missile to complement its AESA radar. This is a significant development, as it would give the korean fighter jet an advantage in its battles against North Korea and any other adversary that may wish to target it from ground or air-based missile systems.

The korean fighter will be equipped with a new manned unmanned teaming system. This capability could be available as early 2022. The korean fighter would be able to control drones in real time and receive imagery of the enemy's location. It will also have the ability to engage targets close to its territory.

ARMMENT

A variety of infrared search and track sensors have been fitted to the South Korean fighter, including an active electronically scan radar and an infrared detector. It has also been fitted with a radio frequency jammer that will disrupt signals in order to prevent the aircraft from being detected by airborne or surface-based radars.

This is a major advancement that will allow the korean jet fighter to be used with stealthy helicopters. It will be equipped to track and identify the target before launching the drone and its payload from the coordinates of the korean Fighter.

ELECTRONICS

The korean fighter has advanced electronics. This includes advanced radar jamming technology, and an onboard avionics suite. It will combine the pilot's telemetry with data from other aircraft to create a single image that can be displayed to the pilot's console. This capability allows the korean plane to attack and target targets close to its base, giving it an edge in fighting against North Korea.

ENGINES

The korean aircraft is powered by two GE Aerospace F414 GE Aerospace engines. These engines have also been used in the predecessor to the korean fighter, the FA-50 light air-attack fighter. These engines have a maximum power rating of 1.2 megawatts.
