Scott Joplin is perhaps best known for his piano-rag "Maple Leaf Rag." The rag was printed at Sedalia, Missouri in St. Louis. It went on to be the first piano paper rag that sold a million copies. While the exact timing of this success is unclear, it was a major milestone in the musical career of the composer. The cover of the rag featured vaudeville stars and was based upon a tobacco advert sketch. The Maple Leaf cover was adopted in the early 1900s. The dedication continued, however, because the rag's lower left-hand page featured a picture of Joplin.
