This week, a new submarine named after Treasure State was commissioned. It will show the Montana people that there is resilience and dedication. In a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, the newest fast-attack submarine of Virginia-class, USS Montana (SSN 774) was commissioned.

The Navy's Virginia Class submarines rank among the fastest-attack submarines worldwide. They can hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships and other assets quickly and also support the nation’s carrier and expeditionary strikes forces.

Since 2009, Navy has been designing and building Virginia class submarines. Block IV, which includes 10 Virginia-class submarines, features design changes to lower total ownership costs. This is achieved by increasing the maintenance intervals.

Newport News Shipbuilding will deliver the submarine, which is the tenth of its Virginia-class subs and 21st to be built under a partnership agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat. She is third of the Block IV-10-ships that include design changes to reduce total ownership cost.
