A Typhoon is a massive, nuclear-powered submarine. It is considered to be one of the largest in the world. This sub is unusual because it has many unique features. For instance, the ship has a retractable bow hydroplane, an aviary, and a sauna. A radio sextant and two periscopes are just a few of the creature comforts it offers.
Typhoon-class submarines have been built since the early 1970s. Initially, they were equipped originally with twenty R-39 Rif intercontinental balistic missiles. They were nearly 8 feet wide and 53 feet long. These missiles were considerably larger than the U.S. Navy's and Royal Navy's at the time. These missiles were eventually decommissioned in 2004. Dmitry Donskoy remains the only Typhoon Class submarine in the Russian Navy. Even though Dmitry Donskoy remains inactive and in retirement at the moment, rumors suggest that it could be modified for future use.
The Typhoon class submarines are unusual in design. They have multiple pressure vessels, which is a departure from other submarines. In addition to providing safety for the crew, these pressure hulls also reduce flooding. Two of the three pressure hulls are Delta class vessels and one is a smaller pressure vessel. Each pressure hull has a single outer cover. As a result, the Typhoon is significantly wider than a normal submarine.
Although the Typhoon's primary purpose is to operate in the Arctic seas, it can also deploy on high seas. The submarine is capable of breaking through the thin crust of ice, has a four-month deployment time, and can operate over an area of 8,000 kilometers. A variety of missiles can be launched from the submarine, including the R-39 (SS-N-20), Sturgeon-2 and Sturgeon-2.
The Typhoon was designed to combat the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class fleet ballistic missile submarines. It was also designed to defend the Soviet Union's Northern Fleet. The Typhoon, despite its powerful weapons was not reliable in its handling. Besides, the Typhoon was a heavy burden to maintain.
The Typhoon was sometimes referred to during its development as Project 941. This was because the class was planned to be a fleet of seven. Orders for the seventh unit were cancelled prior to a significant stage in the development process. Most Typhoon vessels of the Typhoon class were thus retired.
All Typhoon Class vessels will eventually be retired. Nevertheless, this may not happen as soon as expected. The Russian Navy expects to commission a new, ballistic-missile submarine in 2029. It is not clear what will happen to the six Typhoon-class subs.
The Typhoon also features a large reserve of buoyancy, an icebreaking cover, and a strengthened sail. Also, the submarine has a retractable bow hydroplane.
