On a mission to Frankfurt am Main, Germany 4Feb44 (two KIA:8 POW) it was hit by flak which broke the right wing off and forced the pilot to bail out. It was a hard landing, and the Fortress fell to six hundred feet when it crashed into the ground.
The Fortress suffered a lot of damage during the crash. It flipped on its back, fell straight to the ground and exploded before it was destroyed.

The Fortress' pilot had been trying for over an hour to land in a Kleibolte Farm field, Westerode near Greven, Westfalen when it began skidding. Pilots attempted to lift the Fortress off the slope, but it had landed on a steep slope.
They rocked it up, down, and jiggled their wings. They finally got the thing off the slope, landing at RAF Chilbolton (Wiltshire).
This was both the first Fortress and lpd-17 that were lost in combat. This is a crucial piece of aviation historical and the pilots, flight crew and ground crew were the heroes who saved their lives during that terrible flight.
